FAQ
What are perler beads?
Perler beads, also known as Fuse beads, are fusible acrylic beads. Normally set in designs on plastic pegboards and melted together with a clothes iron, they can also be strung together to make necklaces, twisted into keychains, or assembled into three-dimensional decoration ideas.
How to iron perler beads?
To start, you will need parchment paper to protect your iron. It's very important to protect the perler heads with ironing paper at all times. Either parchment paper or wax paper will work.
Then, pick a flat surface to put beads on a pegboard. When you're satisfied with the pattern, preheat a dry household iron to medium or high heat. If you use water in your iron, the steam will destroy the beads. So don't use water in the process!
When the iron is heated put your ironing paper on your fuse beads. Then take the iron and shift it in a circular motion for about 30 seconds while pushing the beads softly.
After you're finished with one hand, place some heavy books on top of the ironing paper to smooth it out. When heated beads are not under strain, they can begin to warp. Wait about a minute. If the beads have cooled, slowly peel away the ironing layer. Take the fused beads carefully from the pegboard and turn them over. Cover the other side with ironing paper and uniformly iron it.
Before starting a bigger piece, we suggest you to try with little samples to get used to it.
How long to iron perler beads?
It depends on the size of your perler bead art. In general 30 second is enough.
How to melt Perler beads without an iron?
Using a hot pan to melt perler heads is the most similar method to using an iron. You will need to keep your stove on medium heat to use this process. This is because when you use the hot pan as iron, it will inevitably lose heat and you will have to put it back on the stove to heat up again.
However, we don’t recommend using this technique because it has more chances to mess your perler bead patterns.
